The LGBTQ+ Community still faces major challenges to full social acceptance in daily life, despite notable strides. A new report details the major challenges and hurdles the LGBTQ+ community faces. The report emphasizes the severe underrepresentation and discrimination that LGBTQ+ individuals continue to face.
Severe underrepresentation results in policy that inadequately serves, and even targets, LGBTQ+ individuals.
70% of LGBTQ+ students report feeling unsafe at school
Over 20% report physical harassment
LGBTQ+ workers face three times the discrimination of their straight colleagues.
Only 0.2% of elected officials are "out" LGBTQ+. LGBTQ+ people are so underrepresented in elected office that it would take electing 36,000 LGBTQ+ candidates for adequate representation.
Trans women of color face especially high violence and discrimination.
The human rights campaign examined 44 murder cases targeting trans individuals. 40 were women of color.
Approximately 1000 bills have been introduced in state legislatures in 2023 and so far in 2024, targeting LGBTQ+ people. In 2023 almost 80 of them passed, restricting health care access, banning books, prohibiting “gay” speech and performances, and outlawing references to LGBTQ+ people in public schools.
